Behind the awkward headline is a genuinely interesting development for anyone building a home cinema: tower speaker lines from Definitive Technology and Polk Audio, two long-established American loudspeaker brands, have been certified under the IMAX Enhanced programme. For alumni setting up a media room in a Denpasar villa or a compact apartment, it helps to understand what that label actually promises.
The idea behind IMAX Enhanced
IMAX Enhanced is a certification and licensing programme created by IMAX together with DTS. It aims to bring a film-like experience into the home by pairing specially mastered content with equipment that meets defined performance standards. On the audio side, certified speakers are expected to handle wide dynamic range and reproduce sound accurately at higher volumes, so that the intended mix of dialogue, effects and music comes through as the filmmakers planned. Compatible content uses a version of the DTS:X format tuned for the programme.
Why floor-standing models matter
Towers are often the backbone of a surround system. Their larger cabinets and multiple drivers can deliver fuller bass and greater output than bookshelf speakers, which is useful for action-heavy soundtracks. A certification gives buyers some reassurance that a model has been evaluated against a published benchmark rather than relying on marketing claims alone.
Practical points before you buy
- Check the whole chain. To benefit fully, your AV receiver or processor and your streaming source or discs should also support IMAX Enhanced content.
