Shopping Black Friday Tech Deals Wisely from Bali
The odd title of this post is a garbled version of "Black Friday Newegg deals", a topic that comes up every November when members swap tips on upgrading laptops, monitors and home-office gear. Newegg is a US-based online retailer known for computer components and electronics, and its Black Friday period usually brings discounts on items such as graphics cards, SSDs, routers and peripherals. For graduates working remotely or running small businesses in Denpasar, these sales can be tempting. Buying from overseas involves a few extra considerations, though.
Check whether the item can actually reach you
Not every product on a US retail site ships internationally, and availability can differ by region. Before you get attached to a deal, confirm that the seller will deliver to Indonesia or that a reliable forwarding service can handle it. Factor in shipping time too. Parcels sent in late November often arrive well into December.
Add up the real cost
A headline discount can shrink once you include international shipping, currency conversion fees from your card and Indonesian import duties and taxes. Import rules change from time to time, so check current customs guidance before ordering anything valuable. Compare the total landed price with what local retailers in Denpasar or Indonesian marketplaces charge. Local sellers often run their own year-end promotions.
Think about warranty and compatibility
- Check whether the manufacturer's warranty is honoured in Indonesia, or whether you would need to send faulty items back abroad.
- Check power requirements. Indonesia uses 230V with Type C/F plugs, so make sure power supplies and chargers are compatible.
- For components, confirm they fit your existing build before paying.
Shop safely
Black Friday also brings a wave of fake "deal" sites and phishing emails. Type retailer addresses yourself rather than clicking unexpected links, and pay with methods that offer buyer protection. If a price looks far too good, it probably is.
Members often share which purchases were worth it and which local shops matched overseas prices. You can browse those notes on our product spotlights page or dig through older posts in the archive.
